We had previously announced that Phoenix Yard Books will launch an original new character based picture book series in Spring 2012, Lollipop and Grandpa, authored by broadcast journalist Penelope Harper. We are very pleased to confirm that we have found and signed the series illustrator, Cate James. So we can now finally introduce you to our two protagonists....say hello to Lollipop and Grandpa!
Four year old Lollipop and her grandpa are intrepid explorers. In the first book, Lollipop and Grandpa’s Back Garden Safari, armed only with sandwiches and their imaginations, they set off on an exciting expedition right to the end of the garden.
Phoenix Yard Books has world rights in the series, including TV, film and merchandising. Stories are by talented newcomer Penelope Harper and the books will be illustrated by Edinburgh-based printmaker and illustrator Cate James. The deal was concluded with Harper’s agent Pat Shepherd, of the Orchard Publishing Consultancy, and Kathryn Ross of Fraser Ross Associates, who represent Cate James.
Emma Langley, Phoenix Yard Books editor, says, “At the heart of the books is the special relationship between an inquisitive little girl and her grandparent. The stories combine the familiar trials and tribulations of being 4-years-old with great fantasy adventures. These will be perfect books for sharing.”
She adds, “We are delighted to be publishing such a promising new talent in children’s books. The warmth and humour of Penny’s writing made it stand out. She has perfectly captured the relationship between a smart little girl and the grandparent who understands the workings of a child’s mind.”
The second in the series, Lollipop and Grandpa Go Swimming will be published in June with the third, Lollipop and the Loose Tooth following in September.
Phoenix Yard Books will support the launch with promotional activity including advertising, author and illustrator events and a Lollipop and Grandpa website where children and their grandparents will be encouraged to vote on their favourite joint activities.
